Relationships thrive when you nurture them and wither when you neglect them.
This is quite an obvious quote. But it’s something I think I should appreciate and notice since I will be starting uni in a week and O-Week starts tomorrow. I think it’s important to remember this when meeting new people and keeping the wonderful friendships I have built during the course of high school.
When it comes to meeting new people and becoming friends, it takes effort. To some degree you have to try. You have to be interested in the other person, sustain conversations without knowing where they’ll go and avoid awkward silences etc. This is why I think it’s good to nurture the relationships with people that you want to be friends with – people who perhaps inspire you to become the best version of yourself. Your effort will be worth it. Furthermore you have to find people you can be genuine with – because to sustain a personality that is not yours is tiring and may lead people to mistrust you. (I see this especially after watching half a season of Dexter.)
When it comes to the sustaining friendships with those I will see less often I will “nurture” these relationships with newly minted traditions. I can’t wait to catch-up again over a picnic or ice-cream :)
